The New York Times – F.B.I. Investigating 2013 Fatal Police Shooting in Florida

News The F.B.I. is reviewing the 2013 police shooting death of Jermaine McBean, the South Florida computer engineer who was photographed as he lay dying, in an image that his family believes suggested that Broward County sheriff’s office tampered with evidence and lied, court records filed on Tuesday show.

The federal Justice Department requested the inquiry to determine if Mr. McBean’s civil rights were violated, according to a June 26 letter sent to Sheriff Scott Israel of Broward County by the special agent in charge of the F.B.I.’s Miami division.

The letter was included in a motion filed Tuesday in which the office sought to delay a federal civil wrongful-death case filed by Mr. McBean’s family. The sheriff’s lawyers said the civil case should be paused, because criminal cases were pending.

Mr. McBean, 33, was shot as he walked through his apartment complex with an unloaded air rifle propped across his shoulders.
