Federal Lawsuit Alleges Maryland Law Unconstitutionally Discriminates Against Independence Candidates For Public Office
Maryland law clearly discriminates against and discourages a citizen from running as an independent/unaffiliated candidate for public office. In fact, it encourages a candidate to create a sham new political party, rather than allowing a candidate to run truly unaffiliated and not beholden to a party’s platform.
Greg Dorsey wants to run for a seat in the United States Senate from Maryland and he wants to run on his own principles to restore true independence and American values to Congress. He has filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, asking the federal court to declare Maryland’s law that creates this severe burden only on unaffiliated candidates unconstitutional in violation of the First Amendment rights and the rights to Equal Protection under the law of all candidates who seek to run for public office independent of any party and all Maryland voters who wish to cast their votes for an unaffiliated candidate.
